AF&PA CASE STUDIES OFFER A ROADMAP TO SUCCESSFUL RECYCLING

WASHINGTON – The American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA) today unveiled case studies of its 2009 AF&PA Recycling Award-winning programs that organizations can use as “how-to” guides to create their own successful paper recycling programs in schools, universities, businesses, and communities.

The case studies, available at www.paperrecycles.org, provide detailed information on how each of the winners developed innovative strategies for administration, public outreach, collection methods, and building partnerships.   The full case studies, complete with brief video clips and sample outreach materials, are available online to provide easy access to those involved in developing and executing paper recycling programs.  

Recycling is one of America’s great environmental success stories and the paper industry is proud to have played a central role in the significant growth in paper recovery in recent years. AF&PA is pleased to present this information so that others can benefit from the award winners’ experiences and apply these techniques to improve or expand their own programs,” said AF&PA President and CEO Donna Harman.

The case studies feature  Wake County, North Carolina’s FEED THE BIN program; Stanford University; Giant Eagle, Pittsburgh; and Orange County, North Carolina.

Thanks to successful programs like these and the on-going efforts of millions of Americans, AF&PA in March announced that a record-high 57.4 percent of the paper consumed in the U.S. was recovered for recycling in 2008.  The paper industry’s goal is 60 percent recovery by 2012.
